Gov. Rauner creates semi-private agency to attract new companies & jobs

Governor Bruce Rauner plans to create a nonprofit, semi-private agency called the "Illinois Business and Economic Development Corporation" to do just that.

In response to concerns about transparency, Rauner said the state commerce department would approve any deals the private corporation offers to business leaders. Critics say there have been problems with transparency when it comes to deal making at similar agencies in other states.

Kyle Harfst, head of economic development at Southern Illinois University, supports Governor Bruce Rauner's decision to create the agency to help lure jobs to the state, and said there's plenty of business opportunity in Illinois, despite dismal job numbers in the last year.
